Unit 2.2 Indian Weavers
Sarojini
Naidu a Nightingale of India has artistically woven the poem named “Indian
Weavers”. She was an important figure in India’s Struggle for Independence.
Sarojini Naidu’s work as a poet earned her the sobriquet of Nightingale of
India.
It is a short poem
consisting of three stanza having four lines each. Each stanza of poem
represents the three important events of human life. The poet talks about three
types of dresses that the Indian Weavers weave at three particular times of the
day. Metaphorically each time and the dress weaved in that time symbolizes a
particular stage of life.
The poet
uses a number of literary devices to express her ideas like smile, imagery,
metaphor etc. The poem has the rhyme scheme AABB. The poem consists of a
discussion between the poet and the weavers. By using symbols of clothes and
times of the day, Sarojini Naidu has sum up the life of human beings in three
main stages.
Imagery
mode and Interrogative tone of the poem attract us to reflect our thinking and
opinion toward poem.
Unit 2.3 Inchcape Rock
Robert Southey the Scottish poet has
composed the poem Inchcape Rock. It is a ballad noting the legends of the
Inchcape Rock, in the north sea about 18 km off the east coast of
angus, Scotland.
poem narrates about the glorious work of the Abbot of
the Aberbrothok and devilish mind Sir Ralph the Rover. To aware and save the
ship from the dangerous rock, Abbot of the Aberbrothok had installed the
warning bell. The Sir Ralph the Rover was devilish and cunning by mind so he
cut the bell in jealousy which leads the wreck of Sir Ralph the Rovers ship in
return journey.
Poem is written in ballad form so it is narrative and
bit lengthy. The first two lines and last two lines of each stanza rhymes with
each other. It follows the AABB rhyme scheme for each stanza. Poet has enriched
this poem by using various figure of speech for enlightenment like alliteration,
simile, repetition, Apostrophe, etc.
The Inchcape Rock is didactic in nature. It’s a ballad convening the
glorification of the adventurous work of Abbot of the Aberbrothok and sinful
deed of Sir Ralph the Rover. Southey had tried to reform the nature of human
mind and aware the reader through his poem by delivering the message of As you
sow, so shall you reap.
Poem has captured my mind by its didactive tone and scenic description. Imagery quality
of poem creates trills and adventurous effects. Poet has arranged the words
successfully to convey his message through his poem.
Unit 2.4 HAVE YOU EARNED YOUR TOMORROW
The poem ‘Have You Earned Your Tomorrow’ is an
inspirational poem written by Eder Guest in a simple tone.
Tomorrow
never come. One should focus on the present tome and should work something good
for the humanity is the major theme of the poem.
The poem is divided into four stanzas of quatrains. The first line rhymes with
the second line and the third with the fourth in each stanza. He has used the
consistent rhyme scheme throughout the poem. The first two lines of the
first stanza are rhymed with last two lines of the second and the fourth
stanzas. The poet raised questions in the poem. There are eleven questions in
the poem. It shows the unique style of the poem. Alliteration and interrogation
are the poetic devices in the poem.
The
poem has the underlying message that it is up to us whether we will have a
better future or not. Therefore, we should consider our actions and deeds
carefully and plan accordingly for a better future.
Unit 2.5 FATHER RETURNING HOME
Dilip Chitre a celebrated bilingual poet is
known as a translator with a remarkable work in Marathi and English.
The poem ’Father Returning Home’ is taken from his eye- shining
work ‘Traveling in a cage’. It sketched the portrait of a suburban father as a
daily commuter.
Dull and monotonous routine of father is the base of poem which
shows the father being alienated in his home. Father is lonely even his
children refuse to share their joys and sorrows with the father they don’t want
their father to be a part of communication. In this materialistic world man
remains isolated.
The poem irregular rhyming words and rhyme scheme. The poem is composed
in two stanzas. First stanza gives the vivid description of father and his
routine. Second stanza draws our attention to the painful loneliness of the
father. Poem is enriched with Simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia and
synecdoche, transferred epithet figures of speech.
Generation gap, lack of communication with older ones, Disrespect nature of
children and loneliness of man on duty attracts the reader towards poem which
remains the underlying message of poet.
